The Restomod

For the extreme hot rodder in a lot of us, there is always some burning desire to get a hold of a "nothing special" Mustang and make it special. This example actually started life as a sports car rental option in the Los Angels area. Today, it runs a 1971 Windsor block stroked out to 410CI with a Tremec T-56 Magnum with 9'' rear end turning True Trak Diff with 4.56 gears

Shelby Drop

The first modification I did to this car was the Shelby Drop. Drilling the upper control arms down one inch, this made a big improvement in handling. Here is the link for the template I used.

T-56 Magnum SST Kit

Installed a T-56 Magnum Transmission from Silver Sport Transmission (SST) with the lower first gear, hydraulic throwout bearing so there's one les thing to adjust. Effectively this gave me two overdrives and less limitation on the gears I can put in.

American Auto Wire Kit

After all the above items were installed and ready to fire up, I noticed I had a short that was arching on the hydraulic clutch line, after lighting five clutch lines on fire, I took the summer of 2023 rewired the whole car front to back with the American Auto Wire Kit. Never fond the short, but the problem was resolved and now all my wiring is clean, labeled, shrink-wrapped and everything is easy to find.

Horsepower

Horsepower seems to be the gateway drug for all the other modifications you don't really intend to do. For example, after rebuilding the engine with a 410CI stoker kit and TorqueStorm supercharger, it has so much power, I had to reconsider everything from the crank to the street.

Ford 9 Inch with 4.56 Gears

Once the T-56 was installed, and the bottom end of the motor was all forged internals with an engine girdle since it was a two bolt main 302 block, we installed a Fab 9 Rear end from Chris Alston's chassis works with 4.56 gears. While we were at it, I put in a Dakota Digital VHX gauge set up with a GPS speedo to avoid mechanical and computational error in the speed sensor

Carburetor Tuning & AFR Gauge

Once the drive line was all rebuilt and dialed in the next item was to tune this monster and make as much power as it can. I installed an AFR gauge to help dial in the carb and as a result the supercharger was relieved of duty until the carb adjusting comes to an end, then it will either be converted to a blow though carb or replaced with one and connected to the supercharger

Drive Line Vibration

Upon driving I noticed a vibration that has begun, first instinct was to check to see if any wheel weights had come off. Next checked bearings/bushings which all looked good so the last item was the drive line. Drive off and sent for rebalancing.
